The Exmoor House food philosophy

At Exmoor House we love good food, and the food we cook for our guests is the kind of thing we like to eat ourselves. In our daily-changing menu the emphasis is on imaginative yet unfussy cooking with good ingredients - wherever possible we make use of local, seasonal produce. We know nearly everyone claims that these days (often ‘locally sourced’ actually means ‘sourced at the local supermarket’) but we can give you specifics: for example, we buy most of our meat from John May in South Molton, who deal with carefully-selected local farms and specialise in top-quality produce. We get our milk, cheese and butter from Axe Valley Dairies in Williton. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate come from D J Miles of Porlock, who tailor their blends to suit the water round here.

Dinner at Exmoor House

A typical three-course dinner might start with a choice of cream of celery soup or home-smoked chicken and bacon terrine with salad. To follow, you could be offered mushrooms in Exmoor Jersey Blue cheese sauce or lamb shank slow-cooked with puy lentils. Pudding might be a rich chocolate sponge with dark chocolate sauce or pears poached in a lemon & ginger syrup. Of course, all our puddings (including ice creams and sorbets) are genuinely home-made - they do not arrive from some industrial estate in a refrigerated lorry. If you don't have a sweet tooth, there is always the option of Somerset cheeses with biscuits (and of course you're welcome to add the cheeses as an extra course if you'd like to).

We generally offer a vegetarian option at each course, and we'll check any dietary needs/preferences with you when you make your booking - we want to make sure you thoroughly enjoy your time with us!

Non-residents are very welcome to join us at Exmoor House for dinner - advance booking is essential - just call us for details.

Wines, local beers & ciders at Exmoor House

To complement your meal we offer an interesting range of reasonably priced wines from around the world, including house wine served by the glass and a lovely dry white from the Oatley vineyard in Somerset. If beer’s more your thing, we stock a range of bottled beers from local brewers Exmoor Ales and Cotleigh, including Exmoor Gold and Barn Owl. And being in Somerset, there are always a few local ciders within reach, such as Sheppy’s.

Breakfast at Exmoor House

Breakfast is an important part of the day here at Exmoor House, and again, we make a point of using quality ingredients. Top-notch sausages and dry-cured bacon, local free-range eggs, decent fruit juice rather than the concentrate stuff, Dartmouth kippers, proper coffee, toasted home-made bread, home-made preserves, farmhouse butter... you know the sort of thing.

Puddings are something special at Exmoor House

Picnics and snacks

If you are going to be out in the wilds all day, you may want to avail yourself of one of our great value picnic lunches. And if you haven’t brought your own Thermos flask, you’re welcome to borrow one of ours.

Tearoom at Exmoor House

Whether you're staying with us or just passing through Wheddon Cross, you might like to try our daytime tearoom - or tea room if you prefer! - open February to October, Thursdays to Sundays (plus bank holidays) from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm. Everything here is home-made, as you might expect: soups, rolls, cake, scones, preserves and the pickles that accompany our ploughman's lunches. This being the West Country, cream teas - with a choice of jams - are always on the menu.

Visit Britain rated our meals as exceptional quality, commenting: “excellent standard of homemade freshly prepared items using local produce".

We're also delighted to say that we were nominated for the UKTV Food Local Hero award 2007: "...Frank produces home made meals that would grace - or put to shame - some of the country's best known restaurants. Freshly cooked, innovative meals, different every day, he has a passion for cooking that I've rarely seen" said a review on uktv.co.uk/food

And here are some comments from our guests:

'Lots of lovely food and good wine'
'Great food and drink selection'
'The food is excellent and I would defy anyone to get better scones for afternoon tea'
